The Historic 2019 UNCF Mayor’s Masked Ball
In December 2019, we united as an auction team to raise funds for the United Negro College Fund (UNCF) in Atlanta, Georgia, at the Mayor’s Masked Ball. This event featured the largest team of Black Auctioneers ever assembled for a fundraising event, with members coming from Alaska, Arizona, Georgia, Texas, and Virginia.
The Cause: UNCF’s Mission
The UNCF believes, “A Mind is a Terrible Thing to Waste.” Their mission is to build a robust and nationally-recognized pipeline of under-represented students who, with UNCF support, become highly-qualified college graduates. They also ensure that their network of member institutions is a respected model of best practices in moving students to and through college.
A Night to Remember
The event hosted approximately 1,400 guests, awarded numerous scholarships, featured notable speakers, held a live auction and special appeal, and concluded with an incredible performance by Charlie Wilson. The fundraising goal was surpassed that night, raising nearly $1.35 million. These funds will provide scholarships to students attending historically black colleges and universities across the US.
The Significance of the Event
The night was incredible and holds even more symbolism today. In the face of current challenges, we are standing for one another in unprecedented ways. What many see as a divisive moment, we recognize as a time of unity. Now, more than ever, we are committed to serving organizations dedicated to civil rights, human rights, and social justice.
Advocating for Inclusion in the Auction Industry
The auction industry is still learning to be inclusive. I am proud to be among those advocating for reform within the industry. Serving organizations close to my heart, I strive to be a voice of understanding, compassion, and resonance. As we did in December, and many times before, we support spaces that are creating equity for all. #BlackLivesMatter, #BrownPride, #LoveIsLove, #BackTheBlue, #WithLibertyAndJusticeForAll
